Lucía was born on Tuesday, July 23 at 12:33pm in Esplugues de Llobregat, Barcelona, Spain. At birth, she weighed 6 pounds, 6 ounces and was 1 foot, 7 inches long. She and Hannah are healthy and happy. Welcome Lucía!
After a tuna dinner prepared by Hannah's mom Ines, we were all about to head to bed. However, at 11:15pm, Hannah's water broke. Hannah, Bryan and Ines drove to Hospital Sant Joan de Deu, five minutes from their apartment. After a rough night of contractions and the sweet, sweet release of an epidural, Lucía entered the world the next day!
Hannah and Bryan chose a name that reflected parts of their family heritage but also gave tribute to strong women that we hope will serve as models for Lucía as she grows into a woman herself.
Lucía Yarza was Hannah's maternal great-great grandmother. After being widowed in 1896, she bought and managed a beer factory and started a soda factory and a famous bakery in Bilbao, Spain. The children she raised by herself went on to run these businesses after she died in 1927.
Akemi is a Japanese name that means "beautiful dawn" and is the middle name of both Bryan's mother Janice and his sister, Jennifer. This name is a tribute to two generations of strong, smart women who have changed the lives of hundreds of children through education.
